"When we play in the game, we take it serious.”

Before week one even began, the COWBOYS tabbed the RAVENS as their rivals for this PFFL Youth season, as two of RAVENS Coach Dennis “Shor D” Wolford’s kids play on the COWBOYS. The goal of Teshir Alston and Tamaya Wolford was to beat their dad, but they ultimately fell short as the RAVENS defeated the COWBOYS, 32-0, in the first game of week three.

Nine-year-old Khalil Schaffer thinks he knows why his team performed so well.

“We have been working on some plays and working hard,” he said. “When we practice, sometimes we joke around. But when we play in the game, we take it serious.”

The COWBOYS were able to jump out to an early lead, as 11-year-old Khalil Weathers scored on the first play of the game. Weathers, the quarterback, also contributed defensively as he picked off a pass on the COWBOYS first position, which led to a Schaffer touchdown, and a 14-0 lead.

Then, right before the half, eight-year-old Dustin Strom took a handoff from Weathers deep into COWBOYS territory, which set up another Schaffer touchdown.

Facing a 20-0 deficit, Wolford believed her team would make improvements in the second half.

“It’s fun right now,” she said. “His (Shor “D” Wolford) team is really fast, but we’re going to switch up some plays and do better.”

Unfortunately for Wolford and her COWBOYS, the offense was never able to click.

One reason for the offensive struggles could have been the rushing ability of 10-year-old Alex Hill, who constantly had pressure on the COWBOYS’ quarterback.

“I was just rushing them hard and trying to pull their flags,” Hill said. “It’s a lot more fun winning.”
