Through the first four weeks of the PFFL season, the LIONS built a 4-0 record and quickly emerged as the favorite in the South Side’s 10-to-12 year-old age division. This Sunday, the team’s regular season championship was on the line and they didn’t disappoint, beating the BRONCOS 21-7.
The LIONS went on top early and never looked back, as the only score by the BRONCOS came on their last possession of the game. Both the LIONS’ offense and defense were dominant as they imposed their will all game long.
The game’s first score happened just a few minutes after kickoff, as the LIONS came up with a safety to take a 2-0 lead. They added a touchdown run on their next possession, and after five minutes, the score was 8-0 in favor of the LIONS.
Still, it was only a one-possession game as the BRONCOS got the ball near the midway point of the half. They quickly picked up the first down and advanced into LIONS’ territory looking to tie things up. Facing a third-and-goal, they took a shot to the end zone. The pass was intercepted, though, as the LIONS took over again.
With just a few minutes left in the half, the LIONS drove down the field and found a way into the end zone again — this time through the air — to take a 14-0 lead into the break.
Next week, each team will take part in the PFFL playoffs with very different outlooks. The LIONS enter as the top overall seed while the BRONCOS are at the bottom, having finished the season 0-6. It should be a thrilling week, with each team giving it their all to take home the championship.
The LIONS received the ball to begin the second half but couldn’t get anything going as the ball went over on downs. But just as the BRONCOS might have had some momentum, the LIONS put the game away with a pick-six by Nico Mowod. The BRONCOS added a touchdown by Steven Okonkwo to close the gap, but it was too little too late as the LIONS won 21-7.
