It was a historic season in the spring of 2011 for the Pittsburgh Flag Football League, and that’s no surprise. Records are meant to be broken, but several records that stood since the inaugural season on fall 2009 were shattered by this season’s record-breaking performers.

Eugene Smith of the BULLDOGS, the most tenured quarterback in the PFFL, set every passing record there is in the fall 2009 season. But unfortunately, saw them all fall this past season as STEELTOWN’s Chris Sullivan re-wrote the passing record books, attempting 237 passes, completing 178 of them and scorching defenses for 44 touchdown passes. All of this while leading STEELTOWN to its third consecutive undefeated PFFL season.

But the passing records weren’t the only ones to fall.

Veteran Scott Eckle from THE U, had a breakout season defensively recording 52 tackles en route to breaking Tim Orsini’s former record of 42, which was just set in the fall of 2010. The importance of this record being broken two straight seasons proves that the PFFL defenses are starting to catch up to the offenses.

Mike Kreigel, of the veteran PRO BOWLERS squad, also took down a record that stood since the inaugural PFFL season. Jason Russell of THE NEW TEAM, rushed for eight touchdowns in the fall of 2009. But Kreigel, known for his intelligent play and efficiency, scored 10 rushing touchdowns, making him the first PFFL player to reach double-digits.

And for the second consecutive season a player from ILLUMINATI shocks the league. In the fall of 2010, it was Ray Toomey being an all-star in his rookie season. But in the spring, Brian Perry did something that not even the impressive Toomey was able to accomplish – Break a record. Perry caught an amazing 70 passes to break Eric Hantz’ 62 receptions from the fall 2010 season. Jason Bialek, one of the league’s most feared receivers, also broke Hantz’ receptions record with 66, but still fell short of Perry.

With records being broken at this rate, who knows what the summer season will hold!
