Don’t look now, but a new dynasty may be forming in the PFFL. After defeating BALLZ DEEP in the championship game of last month’s Dust Off the Rust Tournament, REIGN went undefeated through Saturday’s Southside Showdown to win their second consecutive PFFL tournament heading into the spring season.

The talented squad led by Mike Lucyk and Jason Cahill were the only team to go through Saturday’s tournament without a loss, and only BALLZ DEEP was able to come within 11 points of REIGN.

BALLZ DEEP fell in the final round of the winner’s bracket, 19-18, to REIGN, before having to match up with an up-and-coming VAPOR squad in the semifinals. The young VAPOR squad proved to be too much for BALLZ DEEP, as they escaped, 13-12, to advance to the championship game.

In the championship game, REIGN took it to VAPOR. Quarterback Mike Lucyk completed nearly 79 percent of his passes in the game, and threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers.

And while REIGN winning proved to me no surprise to most PFFL onlookers, one team did turn some heads. The team of RAT TACTICAL, led by quarterback Mikey Wright, surprised many with their upset of WRECKING CREW to advance to the semifinals of the loser’s bracket.

Wright led his team to victories over WRECKING CREW and PUBLIC DRUNKENESS, with sack machine Goose Fisher, and only lost to BALLZ DEEP and VAPOR by a combined seven points. If this team sticks together, it could prove to be a force come spring season.

There was one disappointing showing in the Southside Showdown, and that was in the performance of the league’s oldest franchise, the BULLDOGS. The team led by quarterback Eugene Smith lost its first two games in the tournament to the SPARTANS, and then VAPOR to be eliminated early.

Let’s hope the BULLDOGS can turn it around, and other teams are ready, as the spring season begins Sunday, March 13.
