7-to-9 Year-Old Report Card

The 7-to-9 year-old age division has been one of the more lopsided in the PFFL’s summer season, with two distinct tiers forming over the first four weeks.

The top group consists of the RAIDERS, PANTHERS and CARDINALS, who are a combined 9-3 on the year. Below them are three teams with 1-3 records — the VIKINGS, BENGALS and BRONCOS.

Heading into the final week of the regular season, each team has good idea of where they sit. Here’s a rundown of their performances with a corresponding letter grade.

RAIDERS (4-0)

The RAIDERS have been far and away the best team in the division, cruising to an impressive 4-0 start. Their closest game thus far is a 14-point win over the CARDINALS last Sunday.

With the win, they clinched the regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. After the bye week, they take on the BENGALS with an opportunity to finish the year undefeated.

GRADE: A+

PANTHERS (3-1)

Despite sitting just one game back of first, the PANTHERS are out of the title race due to a 22-6 loss to the RAIDERS June 18. They’ll start the playoffs in the No. 2 position regardless of the result next week.

Outside of the loss to the RAIDERS, the team has improved throughout the year after surviving the CARDINALS in week one. They scored a combined 50 points against the BRONCOS and BENGALS in weeks two and four, respectively, and their offense should be able to keep them in almost any game.

GRADE: A-

CARDINALS (2-2)

The CARDINALS have been the most up-and-down team thru the first four games, losing in weeks one and four to the PANTHERS and RAIDERS while handily beating the BENGALS and VIKINGS in weeks two and three.

They’ve placed themselves firmly in the middle of the division and close out the season next week with a game against the BRONCOS. With a win, the CARDINALS would clinch the No. 3 seed, but they would drop to the No. 4 spot with a loss.

GRADE: C

VIKINGS (1-3)

The VIKINGS got off to a rough start in the first few weeks of the season, falling in each of their first three games. They got on track last week though, beating the BRONCOS by a score of 24-12.

The offense has been the most inconsistent part of the team and is the main reason they’re tied for last place. In weeks two and three, the VIKINGS failed to score a single point and lost convincingly to the RAIDERS and CARDINALS by a combined score of 42-0. But the defense has been adequate, and last week’s win provides hope the team can turn things around.

GRADE: D+

BENGALS (1-3)

After a good start to the year in week one, the BENGALS have completely fallen apart over the last three weeks, dropping to 1-3 with a tough matchup against the RAIDERS in the final week of the season.

Like the VIKINGS, the lack of offensive output is what has cost the BENGALS. In week one, the offense put up 24 points, but since then, they’ve only scored 18 — six in each game. If things don’t improve soon, the team could see an early exit in the playoffs.

GRADE: D

BRONCOS (1-3)

Of the three teams tied at 1-3, the BRONCOS are the only one experiencing the majority of their issues on defense. The unit has given up almost 23 points per game, and while the offense has made strides over the past couple weeks, it has been unable to keep up.

In the team’s only win — a 30-6 demolition of the BENGALS in week three — however, the defense was outstanding, leading the team and stifling the opposing offense. Going forward, they’ll need similar performances if they hope to make a run in the playoffs.
