Coach Gilliard Energizes Raiders

Watching the RAIDERS warm up for their mid-afternoon game against the JETS, you can tell how much coach Tyrone Gilliard enjoys being on the field.

He teaches his team how to perform a spin move correctly, approaching each of the players in a low stance before letting them bounce off to the side. He lets the kids enjoy themselves though, later playing catch with some of them in between the fields.

Once the game starts, Gilliard’s passion is even more visible. He is constantly talking with the players, instructing them as to where they should be and what they should be doing. He’s locked in, wearing catching gloves even though he’s the coach.

Gilliard’s son, Ty, plays cornerback when the team is on defense and made several impressive plays in the opening half, allowing the team to take a one-possession into the break.

Gilliard continued to coach during halftime, telling the team they had to keep playing hard despite holding a lead. Aside from all the seriousness, he asked if they were enjoying themselves, to which everyone agreed.

The second half was a bit physical, as one of the JETS players got bulled over near the goal line. Gilliard jogged over to check if the player was okay. He was, and Gilliard ran back into the RAIDERS’ huddle to call the next play.

The RAIDERS went on to win the game by a score of 14-8. It was the group’s first win of the year, but they backed it up with another one over the COWBOYS to finish the season with a 2-4 record.
