Taking the field for their early-morning game against the DISORDERLIES, the HURRICANES knew they were the underdogs. They entered the week with a 3-4 record while the DISORDERLIES were at the top of the Iron North division at 6-1.

“We kind of already knew that it was going to be tough,” HURRICANES receiver Ronnie Smalls said.

The HURRICANES sport some of the league’s best-looking uniforms. Their jerseys are white with blue stripes down the side and HURRICANES written in bold across the front.

But while they had the better look, they were completely overwhelmed on the field. The team was shorthanded, playing without several players after two consecutive bye weeks.

“We took two weeks off [and] we didn’t have all our players, so we came in kind of unorganized,” Smalls said.

Quarterback Darius Bush threw an interception on the team’s first possession, and the DISORDERLIES took it back all the way, grabbing an early 7-0 lead. Later in the half, the gap grew to 14 as the HURRICANES gave up a touchdown just before the break.

At the start of the second half, things got worse for the HURRICANES as the DISORDERLIES extended their lead to 20 on the opening possession.

Trevor Gowder provided some hope a few minutes later though, as he made what was undoubtedly the play of the game defensively. The DISORDERLIES dropped back to pass, throwing into the left flat. Gowder cut the route off, deflecting the pass high into the air. He was able to control the ball and returned it to the end zone to get the HURRICANES on the board.

Gowder’s heroics weren’t enough though, as the DISORDERLIES scored two more times, winning by a score of 34-8.

The result wasn’t what they wanted, but the HURRICANES fought and kept things close for much of the first half. At full strength, this team is a force to reckon with. If they can get some things sorted out, they’ll be in position to make a run in the playoffs.
