“Kids come here, and they don’t even know what a football is,” Tillman said.

Practicing before their afternoon game against the EAGLES, the BROWNS’ head coach Phill Tillman runs the team through a series of plays, carefully watching to make sure everyone follows their assignment.

When someone runs the wrong way, he politely corrects them and fills in so he can show them their route. For Tillman, it’s not about winning, but rather about bringing a hard-working mindset every week.

“The biggest thing is attitude,” Tillman said. “I try to teach them [to have a] positive attitude. If you give me attitude and effort, that’s the biggest thing.”

The team’s most common play is the reverse, which worked to perfection at several points in the game. Tillman’s son, who goes by Ty, is one of the team’s star players. Tillman said coaching his son is a very special experience.

“[Coaching Ty] is wonderful. It’s a great thing,” Tillman said. “Of course he’s got a million different ideas on what to do, you know, trying to be the assistant coach… [But] it’s great working with him and some of his friends.”

Tight defense from the EAGLES along with a series offensive miscues led to the BROWNS losing a low-scoring game, 13-6. But despite the loss, Tillman pointed out his team’s will to compete in the group’s post-game huddle, adding that he wants them to bring the same energy level every week.

Tillman said the PFFL is a great experience for young kids. One of his favorite parts of coaching is having the ability to watch not only his son, but also other kids grow up and learn about the game of football.

“Kids come here, and they don’t even know what a football is,” Tillman said. “[It’s great] for them to be able to just pick it up and understand everything that comes along with playing a game... The kids love when they win, but as long as they give their best effort and they’re learning and they’re growing every game, that’s the most important [thing]”.
