In the first week of the PFFL spring season, the STEELERS dominated the REDSKINS on both sides of the ball, winning their first game of the season 24-9.

The STEELERS’ (1-0) defense was all over REDSKINS(0-1) quarterback Matt Schmitt throughout the game, intercepting him twice in the first half. The offense played just as well, as Jehlani Alston had two long touchdown runs which broke the spirit of the Redskins’ defense.

The STEELERS got the ball to start the game, but after picking up a first down, the drive stalled and the REDSKINS took over deep in their own territory. Schmitt threw his first interception a few plays later, and the STEELER defender returned it all the way to put his team up 6-0.

Each team’s offense continued to struggle, as the rainy conditions made throwing difficult for both quarterbacks.

“It was hard to throw the ball. It was hard to run,” STEELERS quarterback Michael Sabo said. “It was just a mess out here.”

But the REDSKIINS broke through at the midway point of the half, as a touchdown pass from Schmitt to Eddie Darkins gave them a one-point lead.

Just before halftime, the STEELERS got the ball trailing by one. On the first play of the drive, Sabo handed it off to Alston, who cut across the field and sprinted all the way down the left sideline for a touchdown. At halftime, the STEELERS led 12-7.

The STEELERS extended their lead with another touchdown to begin the second half, and went up 24-7 on the second of Alston’s touchdown runs with only a few minutes left. Washington intercepted the conversion attempt and returned it for two points, but it made no difference, as the STEELERS went on to win in dominating fashion.

“[The keys to success were] teamwork and everybody communicating,” Alston said.

Next Sunday, the STEELERS will look to build on their momentum when they take on the BENGALS at 4:30 p.m. The REDSKINS, on the other hand, will try to bounce back against the PANTHERS on Sunday, April 9 at 6 p.m.
