Instant Offense vs. Long Drives

In flag football, half the battle is scoring points.

As a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles I’ve grown accustomed to watching Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson run the NFL’s fastest offense. Big plays through the passing game are heavily featured. That being said, there is an effective alternative to running a quick-strike offense. Fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers prefer their offense to use short, intermediate passes to control the game clock.

At times there are quarterbacks with big arms and fast receivers that believe they can just air it out whenever they need to score points quickly. While long pass plays are fun to watch, teams that lack the personnel to successfully go deep will get blown out by teams that can sustain drives.

In flag football, half the battle is scoring points. The other half involves doing everything in one’s power to keep the other team from scoring. One way to achieve the latter goal is to use shorter passes and designed runs to execute time-consuming, clock-eating touchdown drives. If you happen to be playing against an unstoppable offense then your best chance to win lies in your ability to limit their scoring opportunities.

The hardest part about being an Eagles’ fan this year is that the fastest offense in the league couldn’t score enough points to advance past the first round of the playoffs. Ironically, the Steelers will be playing in their eighth Super Bowl game this Sunday. That’s just a coincidence…right? WRONG! Stop trying to win games on one play and start running the clock out!
