Does Superior Athleticism Assure Flag Football Wins?

Body shape and size have little to do with the success of flag football.

So you were the most dynamic player on your college football intramural team huh? Let me guess, your raw athleticism powered you through all the frat boys in the regular season, and maybe even early rounds of the playoffs?

But what happened after that? Pure athletic ability wasn’t enough when you found yourself playing worthy competition, was it?

It happens in every flag football recreational league. Athletic ability can allow you to dominate the stat books, and even reach the postseason.

But to win a championship, you need more than athleticism.

Is your team in for the spring?

The best teams in flag football are smart. They know how to control the clock, and they know the types of plays to run.

Good teams know how to make adjustments to coverage, and also what types of coverage to run against different opponents.

So don’t be surprised if a zone defense locks you down when you and your athletic ability try to run down the sideline for a jump ball every down.

And don’t be surprised when the “250-pound couch potato” does a spin move by you right into the endzone. Body shape and size have little to do with the success of flag football.

It’s a game of precision. To the best flag football teams, it can be a chess match. Whichever team adjusts the most others will win.

So while being athletic can surely be an advantage to any team, don’t expect to compete in the top flag football leagues based solely on your athleticism. You need to put in the work if you want to be great.
