Cheers to the Fall 2016 All-Stars

Although HIGH OCTANE would ultimately earn the FALL 2016 championship due to their roster full of All-Star players, there were multiple teams from both conferences that benefitted from the play of competitors who performed at elite levels this season. Let’s take a moment to reflect on this year’s All-Star Teams.

STEEL CONFERENCE

First Team- The first team all-star team is comprised primarily of seasoned veterans. Mike Miller and Eric Quinn from STEELTOWN have been consistently productive throughout their tenures with the PFFL. Miller made the team as an ironman based on his 38 catches and four touchdowns on offense and his 27 tackles and five interceptions on defense, for example. While I could laud the accomplishments of players like Jordan Fowler and Bryan Maldonado (a player I view as the PFFL equivalent of NFL Hall-of-Famer Cris Carter), I must admit that Jeff Holmes of the PATRIOTS really caught my attention this year. His 56 catches and 10 TDs were crucial to the PATS even though the team still finished with a disappointing 3-7 record on the season. At some point if the PATS don’t start winning, a winning team will start to inquire about acquiring the talented wideout via free agency.

Second Team- The second team for the STEEL CONFERENCE is perhaps our most unpredictable all-star team ever chosen. Except for BILLY GOATZ WR Rick Douglas and STEELTOWN’s legendary quarterback Chris Sullivan, everyone on the second squad is a first-time all-star. Dan Barson aka “Mr. Intensity” has been knocking on the door of the all-star team for quite some time. Although he was selected to the SPRING 2016 All-Star game, his first season with the PATS formally put the rest of the league on notice about how dynamic Barson is on both sides of the ball. Journeyman Rusher Robin Sewell will be making his first all-star appearance after leading the STEEL CONFERENCE with nine sacks. As compelling of a story as the second team is, I still expect the first team to win on Sunday.

IRON CONFERENCE

First Team- Josh Vermilian, Kenny Ashmore, and Bruce Thornton are going to be impossible for any defense to stop. There is no doubt in my mind that these three perennial all-stars are the top deep threats in the PFFL. After another stellar season, PRIMETIME’s Jason Scott will be quarterbacking the first team. Fans should look for Scott to go deep on first down early and often. Aside from the usual suspects, this season’s all-star game will feature one of the most underrated players in the league. WRENIS PINCKLES’ Defensive Back Mike Daverio put on a clinic this year. He led the IRON CONFERENCE in tackles with 38. In addition, the defensive guru contributed five sacks and two interceptions and a pick-6. The IRON’s first team is simply too stacked to lose to any of the other three teams during tomorrow’s games.

Second Team- At first glance the second team for the IRON CONFERENCE looks severely overmatched in comparison to the conference’s first team; however, the presence of all-time great QB Cornell Mack should give fans cause to pause with the forgone conclusions that predict a blowout loss for the second team when they face the first teamers tomorrow. WRENIS PINCKLES’ player Mike Galet has been overlooked by the PFFL for far too long. His ability to play receiver and DB effectively will give the second team a legitimate dual threat. SMOKE Wideout Craig Stamm (50 receptions, 10 TDs) will give Mack a solid slot receiver to utilize on fourth downs. HONEY BADGERS’ Rusher Alex Lohman (11 sacks) will do his best to harass Scott as the passer tries to connect with his wide receivers down the field. While I expect the first team to prevail, I would not be surprised if the second team put up a valiant effort.
