After playing second fiddle to the Pittsburgh Classical Academy (PCA) KNIGHTS all season long, the SOUTH HILLS HUSKIES overwhelmed the number one seed in the Interscholastic League Championship game 44-25! The victory capped off the inaugural season of the league after Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) and the Pittsburgh Flag Football League (PFFL) joined forces to create another sports activity for middle school students.

In their first regular season matchup, the KNIGHTS scored 28 points in the second half to defeat the HUSKIES 28-18. If I were a betting man I would have predicted that the smart money would have been on PCA to deliver a similar performance against the second-ranked HUSKIES in the championship game.

Late in the second half, PCA was able to build a 19-15 lead against SOUTH HILLS in the championship. Star Running Back Leon McCoy was exploiting the the HUSKIES’ lack of closing speed on the outside while scoring multiple touchdowns.

Immediately after McCoy’s last TD, SOUTH HILLS called a timeout. I do not know what Coach Will told his players in the huddle, but whatever he said was effective.

On their next possession, Dante Douglas took a reverse handoff the distance to put the HUSKIES back on top 22-19.

Once they reclaimed the lead, the ORANGE DOGS never looked back. In the final minutes of the game, the HUSKIES scored 30 points. Other than allowing a late score by the KNIGHTS as time expired, SOUTH HILLS played a perfect game in crunch time.

Despite the disappointment that PCA Coach Abby Phillips and her team experienced, the KNIGHTS seemed to be in good spirits after the game.

Ultimately the championship game came down to the two teams that were the best during the regular season. Although the SPRING season is a few months away, I feel confident in saying that a grudge match between SOUTH HILLS and PCA in the title game is highly possible.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE SOUTH HILLS HUSKIES!!!
