Interview with LaRae Butler

After four weeks of play, the COWBOYS currently sit at 0-4 in the 10-12 year old age division.  However, they’ve had some close losses to good teams, like the undefeated VIKINGS and 3-1 RAVENS.

Despite their record, the COWBOYS are hopeful they can turn their season around.  Under the guidance of first-year Coach Lance Markel, the COWBOYS show great promise.  Team members include LaRae Butler, Ahmir Culmer, Joseph Kitchen, Cole Markel, Jonathan Nichols, Matthew Nichols, Marcus Williams, JeSean Wright, and Sage Yanoff.

Coach Markel said he took a team this year to have the opportunity to coach his son and be a further part of the PFFL.  He feels the sport of flag football teaches young players important skills, minus the contact.

“Playing tackle at 8, 10, 11 years old doesn’t make you any better of a football player.  At this level, you can hone the skills, like throwing and catching.  It gives kids an awareness of the game and the concept while emitting the tackling.”

In terms of what he wants his team to learn and improve on, Coach Markel is focusing on the basic skills and teamwork.  Keeping it simple and organized appears to be his motto and he definitely has some players that love the sport.

LaRae Butler said she likes playing flag football because “there are not as many players as there are in tackle, so you become a lot closer with your team.”

LaRae splits quarterback duties with Cole Markel, who said he also likes the small number of teammates.

“I really like flag football because you get the ball a lot more since there are not as many players.”

Joseph Kitchen added that “it isn’t as rough as tackle and it’s a flag football where you know you’re going to be safe and not be injured.

And most of the COWBOYS said offense was their favorite overall because you get to more opportunities to score.  Both Coach Markel and his players have high hopes on not only winning their first game but a championship.

In Week 5, the COWBOYS are set to face off against the COLTS, who are currently 1-3.  If the COWBOYS work hard to improve their offense, they could get their first win of the season.  So don’t count the COWBOYS out just yet as they look to surprise people.
