Interview With Nathan Valukevich

In Week 3 the BEARS and FALCONS played against each other in a game that featured a playoff atmosphere. Spectators were on the edge of their seats as both squads competed at the high levels of intensity set by their coaches. Ultimately this game came down to execution and turnovers. As a result of the BEARS’ execution and the FALCONS’ turnovers, the BEARS beat the BIRDS 42-26.

One of the unsung heroes for the BEARS in this game was Nathan Valukevich AKA “Nate Dogg.” Physically Valukevich is not the biggest player in the world. In fact, he is usually the smallest player on the field whenever he matches up against the teenagers hitting growth spurts in the Upper Division. Nevertheless, this young man is adept at compensating for what he lacks in size by giving maximum effort every time he plays.

For example, as the game started between the BEARS and the FALCONS, the BEARS knew that they would be going up against several playmakers like Skylar Kunkel and and Tyreem Sarvis. After a few early mistakes I could see that the BEARS were losing confidence.

ENTER NATE DOGG.

As soon as Valukevich touched the ball for the first time, he immediately converted a tough reception into a first down. His quickness once the ball is in his hands is comparable to that of a prime Wes Welker.

One of the most impressive aspects about Nate Dogg’s game is that he is extremely self-aware. The slot receiver admitted to me that his father and brother (both of whom are considerably bigger than Valukevich) often get physical with him whenever the guys are playing football at home. Instead of quitting, Nate Dogg says that playing against his father and brother actually helps his game on the field.

“It helps me be more aggressive,” he said.

When I asked Valukevich to elaborate, the scrappy player told me, “size doesn’t matter.”

Apparently it does not because this young man’s fearless attitude has impacted his entire team. Nate Dogg’s pick-6 interception late in the game helped to solidify the BEARS’ lead over the FALCONS who were threatening to make a comeback.

Valukevich is the kind of player that should be a source of inspiration for all players regardless of size, because his performance in the clutch combined with his determination to win are qualities that all players should possess.
