A highly anticipated matchup took place this Sunday between two of the best teams in the league: VAPOR (6-0) and MMG (5-1).

Both teams started strong offensively.  VAPOR QB Cornell Mack ran his way down the field, eluding tackles, to score the team’s first TD.  However, MMG responded with a long bomb from QB Tony Battaglini to WR Trey Johnson for a TD.

Both teams then switched gears to defense, playing strong the rest of the half.  The opening drive touchdowns were the only of the half.

Down 7-6, MMG came out of the half and quick passed their way down the field.  The drive ended when Battaglini found Johnson in the back of the endzone for his second TD.  However, VAPOR answered right back.  After several passes, Mack found Ed Tozzi up the middle for a TD.  A good extra point to WR Josh Vermeulen gave VAPOR the lead 14-12.

MMG got the ball back and worked their way up the field.  However, they shot themselves in the foot just shy of the endzone.  MMG received a penalty for impeding the rusher and Battaglini threw past the line of scrimmage on the next down to turn over the ball and the game to VAPOR.

VAPOR ran the clock out with two rushes by Mack, the latter of which resulted in a touchdown and VAPOR’s win by a final score of 20-12.

QB Cornell Mack led VAPOR to victory in this one.  Not only was his passing game strong, with a 69% completion percentage to his spread of wide receivers, but his run game was even better with 2 rushing TDs.  On the defensive side, Elliot Williams had a sack and others recorded multiple tackles.

MMG has a strong QB in Tony Battaglini, who completed 14 of his 21 passes and threw for 2 TD passes.  WR Trey Johnson had both of the team’s TD receptions and a team-high 6 receptions.  Defensively, Jasson Adamson and Eric Livsey each had 3 tackles.

One of the deciding factors of this game was Mack’s ability to elude sack-leader Joe Scalise’s grasp every down.  However, VAPOR’s strong defense and MMG’s crucial penalties were what resulted in VAPOR remaining undefeated.
