A Day of Competitive Play . . . with a Side of Trash Talk

I’m definitely looking forward to seeing who gets better, who upsets who, and ultimately who comes out on top.

As a new writer for the league, today’s opening day was my first glimpse into the adult league.  My younger brother has played for the youth league in the fall for the past three seasons.  However, the youth league is obviously nothing like the adult league.

One thing I noticed in almost every game is that the players loved to throw some jabs and words at one another.  Is there anything wrong with that?  I don’t think so.  Trash talk is healthy, to a point of course; it gets players fired up, gets them motivated, and makes them ant to work harder to prove themselves.

In the first day of the spring season, the teams all displayed a high level of energy.  I loved the seriousness, yet enjoyable approach the teams took to the games.  They made sure the stat keepers recorded every catch and every tackle and weren’t shy to argue if a call didn’t go their way.  Most came ready to play and seemed excited to be back at it after the winter off-season.

However, there were definitely some teams that didn’t come ready to play.  As I made my rounds, I noticed some teams with great talent.  Quarterbacks with strong arms, receivers with great hands, corner-backs with killer speed.  Then there were some other teams that showed a lack of consistency and organization.

Now I’m not kicking these teams to the curb – it is only week one.  Obviously, athleticism helps a great deal when it comes to winning.  But the teams that won were the teams that had chemistry, came ready to play, and communicated amongst each other – all big parts of what it takes to win.

I’m definitely looking forward to seeing who gets better, who upsets who, and ultimately who comes out on top.
