The tournament Sunday at Ursuline High School featured seven quality teams, and the semifinals match-up was a battle between two of the best. MAHONING VALLEY scrapped to a, 26-13, win over the CAREBEARZ.

MAHONING VALLEY quarterback Mike Lucyk dominated the CAREBEARZ defense, torching the team for three touchdown passes. It seemed like an effortless game for Lucyk, but he gave the credit to his teammates.

“It was all my receivers out there,” Lucyk said. “They came to play and ran some great routes out there.”

The game started sloppy as the CAREBEARZ were stalled on its first drive after just four plays, and Lucyk threw an interception off of a deflected pass on his team’s first drive.

Both teams settled down and scored on the next possession. However, both teams failed to convert on the extra points, making the game, 6-6, with just over two minutes left in the half.

After the MAHONING VALLEY defense stopped the CAREBEARZ on four plays once again, Lucky capitalized by hitting Kevin Bachner on a long touchdown pass to give his team a, 12-6, lead at the half.

MAHONING VALLEY got the ball coming out from the halftime break, and took control of the game when Lucky found Andy Hippley for the touchdown, giving the team a, 19-6, advantage.

The CAREBEARS had come back from a deficit earlier in the morning to defeat BALLZ DEEP with just seven seconds left in the game, but MAHONING VALLEY wasn’t going to allow it to happen to them. After a quick touchdown from the CAREBEARZ, MAHONING VALLEY scored again, giving the team a, 26-13, lead, which proved to be the final score.

Being the team to come out of the winner’s bracket wasn’t enough for the experience MAHONING VALLEY team however.

“We expect to win it all,” Lucky said. “If I had to pick, I’d like to play JOE’S PROS.”
