In a day that saw two separate “Doug Flutie” like last second touchdowns for wins, the Southpointe Showdown appeared to measure up as another great competitive and fun tournament. With Southpointe Fieldhouse and its pristine field turf serving as the location for the tournament, many were impressed with the improved efficiency of the referees and general “flow” of the evening. Games stretched well into early Sunday morning and as the night rolled on, competition seemingly increased despite the late night hours. Tournament champs KRYPTONITE hailing from nearby Youngstown, OH and the YFFA league put on a great showing all night lead by the precision passing of Mike Lucyk and consistent hands of both Jason Hagerty and Matt Lobaugh. Josh Pontius along with Nate Banick added significant depth and high performance for the day, but most notably John Burd set a PFFL record by snagging 39 receptions on the day. In defeat, the PA PUNISHERS represented Pittsburgh well and also set a tournament record in scoring primarily lead by the laser arm of their dynamic quarterback Jason Cahill. Cahill impressed many with his athletic endurance and sharp moves which helped him also set a PFFL tournament record of 23 pass TD’s.
With some teams walking away with bruised egos, most left with answers and better insight for the fast approaching Spring Season
