Youth leagues provide a healthy socialization and recreational structure for kids

On St. Patrick’s Day 2012, the Pittsburgh Flag Football League (PFFL) introduced many kids and their parents to the Youth League Combine. For the past two youth seasons, the league has shown steady progress in terms of the amount of kids registered. However, on a record-breaking day in Pittsburgh weather-wise, the PFFL broke a youth league record by engaging over 70 children in drills and exercises.

While league officials were pleased with the turnout of youth players in Week 1, they felt even more gratification after hearing the outpouring of positive feedback from new PFFL parents. “I think the kids are happy,” said Renee Robinson (mother of 8-year-old Andre Curry). “It [the PFFL] looks really organized and well-put-together and I think it will be a good opportunity for Andre to meet new friends.”

“It’s going well, it’s great,” Michelle McDonald (mother of 9-year-old Dashaun Dorsett and 7-year-old Mariah Tillman) said. “I like the breakdowns, the exercises, it’s great.”

As I’ve mentioned in previous articles, youth leagues provide a healthy socialization and recreational structure for kids. During the youth workout, several parents reiterated this premise as they expressed their individual goals for their young athletes.
McDonald said, “I just hope my son strengthens better…he’s already a great football player. Later on, the proud mother joked, “And I hope Mariah gains fundamentals.”

Overall, Week 1 of the Spring 2012 season was a huge success! On behalf of the PFFL, I would like to thank all of the parents for believing in our league.
