VULTUREZ easily upset the perennial winners in a 21-0 victory in the championship.

Prior to this year’s Southpointe Showdown tournament PFFL fans were guaranteed three things in life: death, taxes, and REIGN winning championships. This time was different as the VULTUREZ easily upset the perennial winners in a 21-0 victory in the championship.

Quarterback Lance Brunsell was a surgical passer as he dissected REIGN’s defensive schemes for an 83.3 completion percentage and three touchdowns. Despite being one of the premier passers in the league, Brunsell continues to be underrated by the PFFL media. I think we can all agree that after leading the VULTUREZ to their first league title, Brunsell is officially an elite quarterback.

Considering the talented wide receiving corps that Brunsell had, this reporter is not shocked at how successful the QB was. All-Star Jason Bialek (four catches, one TD), Dan Krchmar (three catches, one TD), and FALL 2011 IRONMAN OF THE YEAR Ray Toomey (three catches, one TD) were exceptional at maintaining good chemistry with Briunsell.

Even more impressive was the fact that all three of the VULTUREZ leading receivers made plays on defense as well. In fact, Bialek forced a safety, Krchmar contributed a sack, and Toomey caught an interception.

Meanwhile, REIGN performed well below their championship-caliber talent in the big dance. FALL 2011 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Mike Lucyk was awful completing just 50 percent of his passes, throwing one interception, and taking a sack. The rest of the squad seemed disinterested in the second half. Honestly I thought they gave up after they failed to pick up a first down on their first possession in the second half.

While REIGN looked like the inferior team in the ‘ship, their chances of winning took a severe hit prior to their back-to-back games against the VULTUREZ. SPRING 2011 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Tony Colaizzi broke two fingers in a previous game against BALLZ DEEP. The injury was doubly costly because FALL 2009 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR DJ Douglas also had to leave REIGN to escort Colaizzi to the hospital. On behalf of the Pittsburgh Flag Football League, I am praying for Colaizzi’s speedy recovery from a painful injury.

CONGRATULATIONS VULTUREZ!!!
