Prior to their game against the STEELERS, the JETS learned that their coach All-Star Wide Receiver Jason Bialek was absent due to a prior engagement. Enter ex-PFFL star Jason Russell. Coach Russell picked up where Bialek left off to lead the JETS to a 31-6 win over the STEELERS.
Young stars Jonathan Wellen and Dashawn Shaffer proved to be a deadly combination for the JETS. Both players made plays at quarterback and wide receiver. Individually, Wellen threw, caught, and rushed for three touchdowns. He also caught a pick-6 interception. Meanwhile Shaffer threw two touchdown passes.
“Me and Jonathan we put some strategies together and used them,” Shaffer said. He elaborated by saying “We used our deep passes and the short post routes at the goal line, and the runs…we just used them and mixed them all together.”
In addition to Wellen and Shaffer, Jo Jo Butler demonstrated great concentration as he made several impressive catches. Case in point, Butler got behind the STEELER ‘D” to catch the JETS’ first touchdown. While his offensive production was incredible, Butler really excelled on defense by covering Marquice Hutson who caught the STEELERS’ only score. Even in a losing effort Hutson reminded the JETS that he is a legitimate weapon for Quarterback Louie Cipolla.
Speaking of Cipolla, the young quarterback had a tough day. His last-second interception to Wellen was a heartbreaker. On the positive side, Cipolla made several impressive completions to Hutson, Clinton Foster, and Jake Kozarian.
On one side of the field STEELERS’ Coach Sean Farr has a lot of work to do to get his squad back on track. Meanwhile Russell’s clutch coaching performance might signal a coaching controversy when Bialek returns.
