Since 2010 the PFFL has hosted an annual tournament at the Southpointe Fieldhouse in Canonsburg, PA. After taking a couple of seasons off, the premier flag football league invited five teams to compete in the “Southpointe Showdown.” Those five teams were CHAOS, PUCK U, BALLZ DEEP, DARK KNIGHTS (a combination of BLACK KNIGHTS and DARKWINGS), and the defending champions WRECKING CREW.

Per usual the rosters for this tourney included free agents that normally play for other squads during the regular seasons. Most notably, All-Star Quarterback Chris Sullivan of STEELTOWN returned to the PFFL to lead BALLZ DEEP. While the two-time OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR has Hall of Fame stats, his performance at Southpointe was abysmal. Against PUCK U, the veteran signal-caller telegraphed several of his throws leading to two picks by Defensive Back Ryan Church. To make matters worse, All-Star DB Bruce Thornton sarcastically snatched a one-handed interception away from a BALLZ DEEP receiver. My biggest takeaway from watching Sullivan play is that Father Time appears to be winning against one of the league’s most prolific passers.

The DARK KNIGHTS have been on my radar in recent seasons for their tendency to struggle against elite teams. Last night’s tournament was no exception. Against the WRECKING CREW, the KNIGHTS lost two games in blowout fashion. On the positive side QB Zack Bahr was able to lead the KNIGHTS down the field for a quick touchdown drive. Unfortunately, Bahr sustained an injury that limited his ability to scramble.

Speaking of the WRECKING CREW, they were flat out unstoppable winning all of their games before losing to CHAOS in the championship game. The combination of All-Stars Brandon Morgan, Tahir Jackson, and Thornton was too much speed for opposing defenses to handle. Defensively, All-Stars Chris Cramer and Chris Booth were physical and competitive against the league’s top wideouts.

Overall, the experience at Southpointe lacked the fanfare that it has had in the past due to the decreased amount of teams and fans; however, the teams that participated clearly enjoyed being able to get back on the field for a couple of hours and make it back home before sunrise.
